Joe Burgess, MA (Oxon - Music)

"Hi! I'm Joe, a professional piano teacher and musician. I studied music at Oxford University where I specialised in piano performance and was an organ scholar at Somerville College. I've taught piano privately and in schools for 12 years. Along the way, I have helped many adults and children develop into accomplished musicians and excellent pianists, many of whom were complete beginners when they started.

As a former classroom teacher and Head of Music, I am mindful of the vast differences in learning styles of each of my piano pupils, and know how to get the best from students of all ages. I have had a highly varied performing career as a versatile pianist, organist and musical director, enabling me to engage fully with my pupils' wide ranging musical interests.

I have a track record of excellent pupil ABRSM results. You'll feel prepared and confident whatever grade you are taking, but you'll also find my lessons never feel exam-oriented. My approach is the same, whether you are preparing for Grades or learning for pleasure. Ultimately, making progress on the instrument and improving as a musician always takes precedence over learning to pass exams.

I believe enjoyment is the key to success at any instrument. With that in mind, I encourage all my students to follow their own interests and to learn a variety of skills, such as improvisation, theory, sight-reading, playing by ear, and song-writing; skills often neglected by school curriculums and traditional piano teaching methods."
